Stage description
On the cycling route up to the city
This path perfectly combines the sea and culture, golden beaches with history and nature with arts. On the cycling route along the beach of the Adriatic Sea you reach Portorož / Portorose, a well-known spa and health resort, and the towns of Izola / Isola and Koper / Capodistria, where the tracks of famous past are still strongly present, tightly connected with the Venetian Republic. Strolling on the picturesque paved streets you can admire numerus gothic palace, porticos, churches and bell towers, rising up in the sky. Then you cross the border and arrive to Muggia / Milje, which idly flirts with the Gulf of Trieste. It is a unique Italian town, which geographically belongs to Istria with the typical Gulf of Trieste. Here you embark on a boat and soon land on the main pier of the main city of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Description
It is advised to take the trail from the Istrian beach to Trieste’s beating heart, so you will sail by boat from Muggia / Milje and land in the main city of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trieste, and on the way you will be amazed by the city, which looks like a vertical amphitheatre above the gulf – you will find more about cycling connection between Portorož / Portorose and Muggia / Milje (across the Strunjan salt pans, Izola / Isola and Koper / Capodistria) in the description of the sixth stage of the first week of travelling. In a picturesque old city centre of Muggia / Milje you take a look at a small harbour, old town walls with doors, above which there are Venetian lions, and the castle above the town. Those who are physically more prepared are advised to visit the old church, dedicated to the Mary’s Assumption dating back to the 13th century. In Muggia / Milje you can embark on a comfortable boat (the number of places for bikes is limited), landing in the heartland or on the square of United Italy (piazza Unita d’Italia), surrounded by several palaces and public buildings, such as the Town Hall, palace of the Regional Council of Friuli, Prefecture and historic cafés. In the town, where you can still feel the Central European culture, you may visit numerous other sights, such as Revotella Museum, Museum of Natural History, Maritime Museum, theatre, Cathedral of San Giusto, synagogue, Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Spiridone, Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nicolas, Miramare Castle, San Giusto Castle, Roman Theatre, Richard’s Triumphal Arch …

Stage description
Between the land, sea and lagoon, canals and reeds
From the centre of Trieste / Trst, from the Unity of Italy Square, you reach the town quarter of St James Church, where the cycling path Giordano Cottur starts, which slightly rises towards the Karst, looking on the Rosandra / Glinščica Valley, one of the most interesting natural sights in this area. Leave the cycling path in Draga San Elia / Draga, on which you have cycled from Trieste / Trst and go in direction towards Basovizza / Bazovica. Continue cycling on the edge of KarstPlateau and slowly descend towards Duino / Devin, where the magnificent castle stands, about which also Rainer Maria Rilke sang praises. Soon you arrive in Italian Monfalcone / Tržič. Those who are not physically well-prepared are advised to take a train from Trieste / Trst to Monfalcone / Tržič. Here a wonderful path awaits you taking you to the mouth of the Isonzo / Soča River, among natural parks, reeds, moors, gulfs, canals, lagoons and small islands. Here is the heaven for the lovers of nature and bird-watchers. In a shallow gulf of the Grado Lagoon, you can also visit the small island Barbana, on which the pilgrimage centre of St Mary the Barbana stands (Madonna di Barbana). As already said, your target is the old city of Grado with the emphasized island character and presence of extraordinary Old Christian monuments, such as Basilica of St Euphemia, Baptistery and Basilica of Mary, Mother of Mercy.
Description
This part of the trail starts on this magnificent trail, reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, named after the Trieste champion Giordano Cottur. From Trieste / Trst it takes direction towards Karst along the railway line Trieste-Hrpelje, dating back to the 19th century, and uses ascending viaducts and tunnels on it. At the start, in the quarter of St James (San Giacomo), there is also an info point. You ascend along the Rosandra / Glinščica Valley, crossed by the ancient path of herbs and salt, and above it, there is an interesting church of Santa Maria and Siaris / Sveta Marija na Pečeh, which clings to the rocky slope. In Draga San Elia / Draga, on the border with Slovenia, turn left towards Basovizza / Bazovica, continue through Villa Opicina / Opčine, Borgo Grotta Gigante / Briščiki, Rupinpiccolo / Repnič and Sgonico / Zgonik on the extreme border of the Karst Plateau, then at the height of Sistiana / Sesljan and Duino / Devin descend down to the sea. The latter is known for its castle and Natural Reserves of Duino Cliffs (Riserva Naturale delle Falesie di Duino) as well as the panoramic Rilke Trail. While crossing the mouth of the Timavo / Timava River, you enter Bisiacaria, a historical territory between the mouths of the Timavo / Timava and Isonzo / Soča Rivers (as regards its etymology, the name is alleged to derive from the Latin expression “bis aquae”). Special habits, history, culture are typical for the area. The next place that you visit is the Italian Monfalcone (“Tržič” in Slovenian). Cycling along this section is advised only to those who are more physically prepared; while to the others it is recommended to take the train from Trieste to Monfalcone. In Monfalcone a nice cycling route leads you through three important natural areas: Regional Natural Reserve of the Isonzo River Mouth, Caneo Natural Reserve and the Valle Cavanata Regional Natural Reserve. When you arrive in Punta Sdobba and to extensive reeds between silt and coast at the Isonzo outflow, cycle along the raised dyke, where the sounds of striking waves, smell of the sea and view of the Istrian coast as well as Bonifica della Vittoria mix or as far as the eye can see. Take the cycling route to the wonderful Grado, an artistic and historical pearl.

Stage description
From Grado and Aquileia to the Marano Lagoon and mouth of the Tilmento River near Lignano Sabbiadoro
On this stage that you will overcome by bicycle and then by boat, you will enter in the lagoon towns of Grado and Marano and continue up to the seaside resort of Lignano Sabbiadoro. Transport by boat is a private service upon the order, with the possibility of embarking in Grado, Terzo di Aquileia (mouth of the Ausa River), Maranuo and Lignano Sabbiadoro. However, you may choose also another possibility: take the cycling route around the Marano Lagoon, passing important historical places. It takes you through Aquileia, a magical archaeological site, a rich emporium in the Roman Era and administrative centre in the period X Regio (Venetia et Histria). The town got an important role at the beginning of the Christian period and became the largest medieval diocese (Aquileia patriarchy). Today, due to an extraordinary value of archaeological findings and Early Christian mosaics in the Basilica of the Assumption, which represent an important milestone in the Italian art history, Aquileia is ranked on the Unesco world cultural heritage list. When you arrive in Cervignano, turn towards west, in direction towards Torviscose, which is an example of rationalism in urbanism in the period of fascism, but you can choose to go the north and follow cycling tourist signs for 10 kilometres. Thus, you cycle to Palmanova, a town surrounded with walls, a masterpiece of the Friulian military architecture: it has a shape of a ninepointed star and a six-angle main square. When entering the town, there is a picturesque settlement Strassoldo, where the Upper and Lower Castle as well as the Church of Saint Mary and Vineis have been preserved. When you set off on the road towards Lignano Sabbiadoro, cross the dried-up landscape and arrive to the centres Marano Lagunare, Precenicco on the Stella River, passing the lagoon up to the known seaside resort.
Description
We leave Grado via a beautiful cycling path built alongside a bridge that crosses the lagoon, continuing all the way to Belvedere, where we join a new bike trail laid out along the former Cervignano–Belvedere railway line. In Aquileia, one of the historical and artistic capitals of Friuli, we park our bikes and relive the charm of history: we stroll through the archaeological site, visit the National Museum, and the Basilica of the Assumption of Mary (Santa Maria Assunta). We return to the cycling path and ride to Cervignano. If time allows, we can make a short detour northwards along the Alpe-Adria bike route, heading toward the village of Strassoldo and the fortified town of Palmanova. We return via the same route and continue effortlessly toward Torviscosa, an urban center that emerged during the Fascist era as industrial production of pulp and synthetic fabrics developed. From here, the route leads us into the Friulian plain, among ditches and canals, past the town of San Giorgio di Nogaro and the village of Carlino. We head south toward the Marano Lagoon and soon arrive in the charming center of Marano Lagunare, where the centuries-old influence of the Venetian Republic is still visible. Among the canals, alleyways, and squares, we can admire the beautiful fishermen’s houses, the loggia, the Palazzo dei Provveditori, and the Millennial Tower (Torre Millenaria). We continue along the magnificent edge of the lagoon, passing through Precenicco and on to the nature reserve at the mouth of the Stella River. Here we turn south toward the lovely peninsula where Lignano Sabbiadoro rises between the sea and the lagoon — a seaside resort that, in the 1960s, became one of the most famous on the Adriatic coast. The scents along this stage are different if we travel by boat: when viewed from the water, the lagoon’s natural beauty becomes even more striking. After an hour of slow sailing, we can immerse ourselves in the silence of the natural surroundings, rich with scents and golden reflections. The boat touches on fishing islands with their characteristic marsh huts. We recommend boarding at the mouth of the Aussa River in the municipality of Terzo di Aquileia, from where you can sail to the tourist center of Lignano Sabbiadoro.
