DESCRIPTION
Tolmin – Nova Gorica – Cividale / Čedad – Tolmin
The cycling route takes place along one of the most beautiful areas of Slovenia. The northern and eastern parts include the Alps with steep mountains, deep valley and magnificent emerald rivers, while the western part includes mountains and mountain reefs, such as Matajur or Kolovrat, with extraordinary panoramic views and western slopes, which slowly descend in the lowlands of the Natisone / Nadiža Valley. The southern part of the area offers cycling tours to various plateaus with brilliant views of the Alps and the whole Adriatic Sea. However, instead of that you may afford only to cycle through the vineyards of the Goriška brda Hills.
As a logical consequence of the open borders, specific cycling tours also pass in the Italian area, enabling the cyclists to experience and compare the Slovenian and Italian coffee on the same day, visit marvellous historic tows, such as Cividale del Friuli / Čedad, and enjoy a real Italian ice cream.

Stage description
When the Soča River rests
The Tolminka River Valley is a protected area of the Triglav National Park. At the most southern entrance in the park near Tolmin, there is a confluence of the two rivers, of which the smallest one creates picturesque Tolmin Gorges. By bicycle, you can reach one of the most beautiful monuments of the World War I, i.e. a Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca, and on the way you can taste the home-made cheese Tolminc and curd.
Leave Tolmin at the confluence of the Soča and Tolminka Rivers, a venue of many festivals in the summer, and continue along the cycling route by the lake up to Most na Soči. The town on the natural peer between the Soča and Idrijca Rivers is one of the most important archaeological sites in the area of South-Eastern Alps with the walking paths by the lake. On the main crossroad in the town turn into an ascend towards Tolmin Lom, which soon finishes in the hamlet Drobočnik, where you turn right on the shelf above the lower part of the lake towards Gorenji Log. The only hard passage on the way through the Vogršček brook ravine, past the Babja jama (Hag Cave), follows. The path takes you up and down and along a narrow side road or rut to Avče and then slightly descends along the path towards the Medieval town of Kanal in the central Soča Valley with Kontrada, a stone square surrounded with the tightly built buildings above the Soča River.
At this point you change the left bank of the Soča River for the right one up to Solkan by crossing the stone Kanal bridge above the Soča Gorges, which is the symbol of the small town Kanal. The trail takes you along the local path through the settlements Gorenja vas, Anhovo, Deskle and Plave below Korada. Turn left at the bridge over Soča in Plave from the road Plave-Goriška brda Hills in Prelesje and then continue right up to the Solkan Bridge with the view of Sveta Gora along the cycling path right by the artificial lake on the Soča River. Before the new Solkan bridge, you cycle past the old railway bridge with the largest stony arch in the world, along the Bohinj Railway Line, which once used to connect Vienna with Trieste. In Solkan, Soča leaves the Alpine and pre-Alpine worlds and you also leave it here, since you cross it only one more time in Gorizia / Gorica on the way to Goriška brda Hills. First you break through the narrow streets of Solkan, which is one of the oldest settlements in the Soča Valley region in comparison to Nova Gorica, a vivacious town with a mild climate, which was formed as a substitute to Gorizia / Gorica, which had remained behind the border.
Cycling through Nova Gorica, designed as a park, leads you to Erjavčeva Street, one of the streets going to the railway station in a shape of a fan. At the same time, it is a town of roses and has a lot space devoted to green vegetation. Continue along the Erjavčeva Street up to the Europe Square and to the railway station with the museum about the border. After the World War II, the present junction of cultures was divided into Gorizia / Gorica and Nova Gorica. The area of the last East-European border, which divided the Transalpina Square with the railway line and station with the same name, has been transformed into the Europe Square with a museum that unites. With the border after the war, the above-mentioned railway line with Trieste was also broken, while today the younger sister of Gorizia tries to create together with Gorizia / Gorica a future without border crossing points, in an increasing co-existence on all the levels.
In comparison to its younger sister, Gorizia / Gorica offers numerous historical buildings. It mild climate and numerous parks have contributed to the fact that it has been also named the Adriatic Nice. You must visit the main square with narrow shopping street, above which the castle of Gorizia Counts rises. When leaving Gorizia / Gorica, you may also visit one of the parks, i.e. Piuma – Isonzo / Pevma – Soča Park on the Soča River banks.

Stage description
Wine roads of the Slovenian and Italian Goriška brda Hills
After visiting both Nova Gorica and Gorizia / Gorica, cross the Soča River and first cycle in the Italian territory on the southern edge of Goriška brda Hills. Collio is only another name for the hills with settlements, and it is finally not divided anymore with the national border. After crossing the Peuma / Pevma Bridge, one of the oldest on the Soča River and important also for Slovenians from the lower parts of the Goriška brda Hills, turn left and only then towards San Floriano del Collio / Števerjan. While ascending, in the hamlet Bucuie (Slovene: Bukovje) split off through Valerisce / Valerišče towards Giasbana / Jazbine, but after a short descent among vineyards and after crossing the national border, turn right into a hill and just pass Gornje and Dolnje Cerovo. In the village Vipolže you can decide to continue on an easier road towards Cividale del Friuli / Čedad by going towards Dobrovo or Plešivo. You can start the circular route in Goriška brda Hills, where you can taste excellent wine and dishes, passing the castle in Vipolže and continuing cycling along the narrow and wavy roads and villages with nice views, yet making quite a few ascents.
The path towards Šmartno and further on constantly rises, while pedaling through a long village Kozana and on the main road arrive in already mentioned village, one of the most beautiful in the surroundings. In the neighbouring Gonjače, a magnificent view of all sides opens to you on a tower: from the Dolomites to the Gulf of Trieste. A crossroad follows, where you turn in direction for Plave, while in Vrhovlje get down from the main road in Lig-Korada direction. Reaching the highest point in Goriška brda Hills, turn left again towards Višnjevik, known as a birthplace of Rebula (Ribolla). An ascend awaits you through the villages Krasno and already mentioned Višnjevik, Drnovk up to Dobrovo, the centre of winegrowing surrounding, where you continue your trail towards Medana, a picturesque village with numerous renowned winemakers, passing the prominent castle.
Descend past Ceglo and while crossing the border in Plešivo, turn right to Corno di Rosazzo, where a part of the road in the territory of the eastern Friulian Hills starts. While approaching Cividale del Friuli / Čedad from the south, you can admire endless vineyards. From Plešivo you can decide to visit also the nearest town Cormons / Krmin, or the park Plešivo, a hill with a settlement and Ruttars / Rutarji Castle in the south, and cross the border river Indrija below the castle. Among the fields along the side paths between the hamlets Gallo and Gramogliano Corno di Rosazzo bypass Corno di Rosazzo, where you ascend for the last time on a hill San Biagio before Cividiale del Friuli / Čedad. Descend in the park Bosco Romagno, with the name of Lombard origin and with the strategic meaning through the centuries, today just appropriate for taking a rest, with its meadows and a number of tree species.
From the northern entrance in the park, cycling along the lower parts of Spessa among cereal fields and vineyards follows, in parallel with the main road Corno-Cividale del Friuli / Čedad. After passing the church between Spessa and Gagliano go along the cycling route, which winds among the plain plantations of vineyards, fruit trees, olives and cereals. In direction towards Prepotno, there is an endless number of vine varieties on the hills and slopes, which immensely cross and cover, whereas on you left you can see the Rocco Bernardo Castle and Wine Cellar. Continue your route on the side roads from Gagliano up to the hamlet Rualis, where you join the main trunk route and through which you enter Cividale del Friuli / Čedad, having the Natisone / Nadiža River tightly by your side.

Stage description
Alongside two emerald rivers
Follow the Natisone / Nadiža River and dominant Matajur, symbols of the Venetian Slovenia, on the main of the Natisone Valleys / Nadiške doline, which connects Cividale del Friuli / Čedad with the Soča Valley, while the Sanctuary of Castelmonte / StaraGora shows on your right. Follow the smaller and warmer of the two emerald rivers against the flow, which follow you along the entire trail, loved particularly by bathers. On the local signs you see that you cycle through a bilingual area with the condensed community. With the exception of a few very short sections, this stage of cycling route is practically plain, since it remains all the way close to both rivers. The section around the former border crossing point in the canyon between Mija and Matajur is scarcely inhabited, yet the richest part with the forests and wild animals on the trail. In the highly lying villages, affected by emigration, “burnjak”, a festival of chestnut is still celebrated.
Look for the cycling route above Natisone / Nadiža River, from the old city centre of Cividale del Friuli / Čedad on the left bank up to the settlement Ponte San Quirino / Pri Mostu, going on the other side of the river, and cycle through villages Vernasso / Dolenji Barnas, Spagnut / Španjud, Biacis / Bijače and Lasiz / Laze. In the middle of the road there is a line from the top across Breginjski kot (Breginj Corner) with the turning for the Cave of San Giovanni d’Antro / Landarska jama. On the opposite bank, there is San Pietro del Natisone (Slovene: Špeter), a cultural centre of Venetian Slovenes, with its bilingual school and Venetian museum. In order to cross the former border crossing point, you must join the main road in Loch / Log. On the same line Cividale del Friuli / Čedad – Kobarid, a train used to drive once, but the line was cancelled, and today only a few rests of the track and station in Stupizza / Štupica bear witness to it. In a few kilometres you leave the lowland in the Friuli Venezia Giulia by the sea and cycle to the foothills of the high Alpine peaks, while Matajur and Krn show you where to go.
On the Slovenian side, in front of the village Robič, there are Nadiža River pools, designed for bathing, and after passing the village you turn from the main road on the path going across Kobariško blato (Mud of Kobarid). At this point you, you say farewell to the Nadiža River and join the Soča River in Kobarid going along a nicely arranged macadam below Matajur, through the villages Sužid and Svino. The latter invites you already at a distance with its view of the Saint Anthony Church and Italian Ossuary and Krn in the background to take a long rest. The villages below Krn or the upper flow of the Soča River with Bovec are undoubtedly worth visiting, and you decide to visit them at the Napoleon Bridge in the Soča Canyon. Our path simply joins the river’s flow up to Tolmin so that you can follow it through the villages on its left bank.
Passing the Ladra village, a view of the Krn mountain range follows you, while you are still caught between the Kolovrat ridge on the other side, where bloody Soča battles of World War I took place. In the village you can decide for a slight ascent and visit a small St Lawrence’s Church with a tomb of the poet Simon Gregorčil and view of the Soča River. First you follow the river through the villages Kamno and Volarje, while in the village Gabrje you may decide also for the Alpe-Adria Hiking Path. Before arriving in Tolmin, above which there are castle remains, you can also visit the Tolmin Gorges so that you slightly turn left in Dolje for Zatolmin. Set off from gorges directly past the cemetery of the World War I on Loče and doing a part of a circular route around the town.

Stage description
Above the Nadiža River at the extreme edge of Slovenia
Alternative to the valley line from Kobarid to San Pietro al Natisone / Špeter takes you to Breginj Combe, which opened towards the Nadiža Valleys after removing border crossing points. At the Stol foothills slowly ascend through numerous villages up to Breginj, which used to be a pearl of the Venetian-Slovenian architecture, and today only a small preserved old village centre can be seen due to the earthquake in 1976. In addition to cycling through the most western Slovenian village Robidišče, in Breginj you can decide for a bit longer route through the village. In the first case, descend through the village Logje up to the bridge on the Nadiža River, not far away from the picturesque Nadiža Gorges with the graduated Napoleone Bridge and pools for bathing. For immediate return towards Kobarid, a route along Nadiža River through Podbela is designed for the cyclists, up to the village Robič. However, an ascent awaits you across the terrace with the remoted village Robidišče. The latter was cut from its parent province of Venetian Slovenia, but despite all difficulties, it preserved a genuine Venetian architecture. Continue cycling to the saddle above Canebola / Čenebola with the chapel and monument. Also in the case of a longer path, you arrive to the mentioned saddle, only that you first cycle from Breginj to the former border crossing point and cross the highly lying bridge over Natisone. Continue through the village Prossenicco / Prosnid, first in direction towards Attimis / Ahten, and then stay on the left above Faedis / Fojda on the extreme edge of the Venetian hills with the view of the Friulian lowland. Then, when you encircle the top of Mt. Ionaez / Ivanac, descend past the Cave in Antro / Landar.

Stage description
On a mountain ridge road from the Alps to Mediterranean area
Despite a tiring road ascent on the Kolovrat ridge above the Soča River, the tour is adequate for a wider range of cyclists with some strength in legs. A long and slow descent to Goriška brda Hills or physical and cultural passage from the Alpine Valley in the winegrowing surrounding awaits you. After the initial ascent, the mountain crest road does not represent any fatigue for the cyclist anymore, so you may peacefully enjoy the views of the Julian Alps at the distance and sea in front of you.
Choose the historical trail Idrsko from Kobarid to the foothills of the ascent. There is a steep road from the village Livek and the second part of the ascent passes Livške Ravne, which is a little more kind, however there is no opportunity to rest. Therefore, a short stop in an open-air museum is necessary, where the mountain ridge road starts to descend. The remnants of the Italian military positions, together with the views and botanic varieties try to keep you, but something magical draws your attention on the south. Only a decent distance separates you from the Goriška brda Hills, but you deal with it slightly descending with some plain parts and an exception of a short section below Korada. In the land of a chestnut, where the Soča River accompanies you on the left side and the Idrija River on the right side, a pilgrimage sanctuary Marijino Celje reigns above the village Lig with the view point of the remaining two sanctuaries on the Road of the Three Sanctuaries, which is more than adequate for a potential last stop before cycling to Goriška brda Hills. The view of them in the south is closed by the Korada Moutain peak and when you leave it, you literally fall in-between the sunny terraces of the Goriška brda Hills and stop in an idyllic village Šmartno.

Stage description
Along the dry river valley and through the rough Dinaric Forest
The alternative to the trail going along the Soča, which is worth of consideration, is definitely cycling through the dry valley. Near the Most na Soči Railway Station turn left and ascend above the Idrijca River through Vrata and enter the Čepovan Valley. Before the settlement with the turn-off for Trebuša, the road preponderates in a slight descend, continuing up to Grgar and adequate for the city bikers, who would like to go to Nova Gorica. The descend does not take a long time, since in Čepovan you turn into macadam with a steep ascent on the Trnovo Plateau in the village of Lokve, where you can afford a long rest for lunch. Various typical home-made dishes made on the basis of herbs are par-ticularly interesting. Lokve is the highest lying village on the plateau, where the hot air from south and freshness of the pre-Alpine world interweave while you rotate pedals.
In this town, you can decide for a longer trail up to Trnovo, i.e. along the cycling route across Mala Lazna, a botanical garden in the middle of pine woods, passing the viewing point on Krnica above the Vipava Valley. It is also worth mentioning the trail to Vojsko with the famous Velika ledena jama (Big ice cave), while the trail along the interesting altitudinal Karst takes you past Smrekova draga. Before starting to descend to Nova Gorica, a pleasant ride awaits you along the forest trails through the Trnovo Forest and small villages Voglarji, Podgozd and Sedovec. Immediately after going through the hamlet Lokve you can choose the forest trail on the right from the main road for Trnovo. You can join the main road only for a short time before the settlement Ravnica, where there was a hinterland in the World War I. Below Ravnica you descend along a road with hairpin bends to the suburbs of Nova Gorica.

In a remoted world of the border river and Three Sanctuaries’ Trail
Set off from the centre of Goriška brda Hills in Kožbanski kot to the north and ascend along a ridge towards Korada. Below the peak go down in the valley of the Idrija River. The cycling on a plain by the border river under Kolovrat follows, where its source is located, through the hamlets and lone homesteads on a demographically endangered area. After crossing the river and the former border at Mišček, you join the thematic cycling Trail of the Three Sanctuaries and ascend on Castelmonte / Stara Gora. All three sanctuaries of the Holy Mary in the surrounding are a very popular pilgrimage destination. Castelmonte / Stara Gora stands out clearly with its unique architecture, and it has a role of fortification. In the centre of Natisone / Nadiža Valleys, if offers a view of Veneto and Cividale del Friuli / Čedad. To arrive there descend along the Alpe-Adria Trekking Route.
From Dobrovo, cycle towards the border crossing point Neblo, but turn on the right in the village and cycle along the brook Kožbanjšček, first on the bottom of the valley and then, passing Hlevnik and Vrhovlje near Kožbana, mount on a crest, and passing the village of Senik, descend in Golo Brdo. Remain on the Slovenian side and on the left bank of the Indrija River, cycle on macadam up to the hamlet Mišček. Right after the bridge, turn left, up to the first settlement, when you turn right in a quite demanding, first paved and then macadam road and ascend to the village of Prepotischis / Prapotišča and the Church of the Three Kings. Arrive on a bike right below the Ssanctuary of Castelmonte / Stara Gora, and descend to the village Purgessimo / Prešnje before Cividale del Friuli / Čedad on a macadam road, which separates from the main road a little bit lower. Continue straight forward to Purgessimo / Prešnje and return to Cividale del Friuli / Čedad after crossing the main road on the trail right along the Natisone / Nadiža River.
